Portsea Pier
Well seeing as the squid aren't playing the game at Mt Martha and the reports say they are at Portsea & Sorrento. It was inevitable that I was going to go, unfortunately I think the squid took the eveing off  as I only got one small one.
There was a few people there who also had small ones, apparently they came on for about 10mins just before I got there.
On the way home I stopped in at Sorrento and also Blairgowrie, which were both deserted, which to me is strange if there are apparently squid around, no luck at either.
I tried sizes 2.5 and 3.0 and a variety of colours. One thing I noticed, is that the guys that got them earlier, where doing a very subtle working of the jig, even just a slow rolling retrieve in some cases.
So any one with a bit of first hand info for these areas feel free to fill me in :dontknow Land/pier based only no boat smh

Re: Portsea Pier
Hey Brett,
We fished for squids at both Portsea & Flinders piers 2 weeks ago & caught squids up to 4 Kgs.
Only small squids occasionally took artificial jigs. We used real bait jigs & caught big ones.
We used sand whitings 1-1.5m under a float. That did the trick.

A bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work.

Re: Portsea Pier
it's unusually quiet on the squid scene at the moment. Plenty of fruitless trips which didn't happen same time last year

Re: Portsea Pier
squid is not the only thing missing this winter. In the last few years, by this time of the year, we were bagging on salmon from melbourne City piers. SP, metals and HB lures were the weapons of choice late afternoons and chicken under float when it got dark. I should have caught at least a couple of hundred salmon by now. No bull on this one. Last year when they were around, catching 40 a trip was normal. Only kept the bag limit of course. This year - ZERO so far from the city piers :cussing: :cussing: :cussing:

Re: Portsea Pier
Went and stood in the rain last night with wolly, no luck at portsea so we stopped by sorrento, got 6 between us in a matter of 10 to 15 minutes then nothing after that.
4 between 350 and 500 grams and 2 at bait size.
Might take the full wet weather gear next time and stay longer hahahaha
