Great day out portsea way
Great day out portsea way
Hi All,
Decided to give some early season gummys a crack today, have heard some good reports coming from down south ppb.
The tides and wind looked too good to be true so we headed out from st leonards across the channel to some good gummy ground i have been scoping out off navionics.
Just after leaving the boat ramp on the way over we saw a lot of fish jumping in front of the boat, slowed down and saw garfish everywhere around the boat, quickly scooped up 10 or so in the landing net without too much trouble and continued on our merry way.
Finally got to our spot after navigating the sand bar maze that is mud island and quickly got our baits in the water.
After a long wait of 5 minutes i saw my rod buckle over and slowly take off like a giant stingray. After about 5 minutes of playing without any signs of a head shake i was convinced this was a big ray so locked up the drag and started to put on the hurt not caring if it busted off. After a few more minutes of trying to reef this thing off the bottom i finally saw colour, holy $hit its a gummy. Finally got it on board for a few quick happy snaps.
No idea on weight but length wise it was 3 cms shorter than me from tail to nose and im 173 cms so ill call it 170 cms, well and truly a new pb. We stayed in the same spot until sunrise with a giant school of yakkas that hung around for a few hours to keep us company, no more gummys to be seen though.
Made the trip back across to St leonards and had a quick go on the squid where we picked up a quick 10 or so and decided to call it quits.
All up an awesome day with a PB gummy and a seafood platter for tea tonight.

Bullseye gurnard I think, I've tried them and they're ok but they taste better when bled. Watch the spines or you'll have a memorable fishing trip.
