Sundays effort
So after finding out what all the fish actually were that I caught, here’s the results. (Thanks to all who helped me identify my catch. Very different outside the bay.)
Up at 2:50 am.
Ready to roll at 3:30 - left Crazyburn.
Arrived Sorrento 5:20, after a boat fuel stop and organising the ramp ticket.
On the water by 5:40 - setup and launched and parked the car solo.
Knowing the weather was promising I temporarily setup and fished close to the ramp waiting for sunrise.
My plan all along the was to get outside the heads - my first attempt.
First light came and I checked the wind wave situation for the day and I beelined for he heads.
Going out amazing, awesome, loved it.
Please bear in mind I’ve never been through the heads before. But today was as good a day as any in my chance to have a go. I was anticipating the choppy and smooth sections in between the heads. That was cool.
The rolling swell just outside was I kid you not at least 3-4 meters. It seemed bigger.
And as I got out further the ocean swell was relatively small.
Not knowing where to start fishing out there I just turned right and headed towards Barwon Heads. Only took felt about 15 minutes to get there.
I sounded around found a few lumps and bumps then just put the pick down in about 30 meters of water and wet the line.
1 x snotty nose trevalla
1 x short finned pike
1 x calamari- caught it on 2 snelled hooks with a small whiting for bait I had drifting.
1 x sgt Baker - released.
Overall had an awesome day, the return trip through the heads was more choppy but the swell was half the size. I’ve gotta work on the whole slack tide timing thing. Is there more to it that middle of high/low tide ?
By the time I got back home, reversed the boat into its alcove, rins d the motor, cleaned up the catch, quick washed the boat it was 7 o’clock. Big day but enjoyed it.
Cheers
Jamie

Re: Sundays effort
It's a buz the first few times you venture through the heads. It's an awesome sight. especially when its a bit messy.
You did well picking your weather. Not as scary as everyone makes it out to be hey! and got some nice fish!
Cheers, Anth

Re: Sundays effort
Thanks all, r putting the pike down as gummy bait,,,bugger would much prefer flake to pike. I’ll have to remember that if I catch one ever again.

Yep, me in my bathtub bobbing around, compared to the big container ships are hey just cruise right on in. Don’t bother at all by 3-4 m swell.Sinsemilla wrote:It's a buz the first few times you venture through the heads. It's an awesome sight. especially when its a bit messy.

While coming back in I waited for one huge ship to exit the heads and I saw the port pilot jump off the container ship onto his transport boat. Cool things you see. Above and below the water.

Re: Sundays effort
Just remembered I caught that pike on the surface, I’d cast a jig way over away from the boat coz I saw something- looked like a small white fin about hand size about 80 meters away. I was trying out this lump of a jig for fun at the time so I hoik it over there. On the retrieve is when the pike took the jig.
