Sorrento Pier 9/02/18

Post by whambamsam » Tue Feb 12, 2019 10:26 am

First contribution here to try to make up for the amount of reading I've put in the last few months.

Headed over to Sorrento pier around noon after no success wandering the mangroves around Stony Point for sand crab. Not sure if I was just walking around the wrong spots there, but saw a post about sand crab here that hinted it was a good spot to explore. Heaps of stingray feeding holes so I suppose the crabs must be around there ~ the holes themselves are usually hotspots for mud crab to hide in up in QLD.

Hit the pier just after noon, had a few people leaving with some small squid ~ gave the jig a crack for an hour or so before switching over to bait. Picked up a few undersized wrasse, a good size leatherjacket, couple of good sized pinkies. Saw a school of great sized KGW swimming around but couldn't get them on ~ good to know that they're about though.

Welcome to the forum whambamsam and thanks for the report.
I usually find Sorrento good for Squid around 1.5 hours either side of a tide change.
Also helps if this coincides with sunrise or sunset.
Cheers

Awesome first report Whambamsam.

Great to see someone do their homework, know what they are doing as a result and it payed decent results. A good size Leather-jacket and two Pinkies. Well Done.

Arthur Fonzarelli would say that them is Happy Days, with a leather Tuscaderso AND two Pinkie Tuscaderos

Ha - not sure if I'd call it knowing what I'm doing, but at least with a bit of knowledge of when to go/seasonality.

Going to give it another go soon!

Anyone have any experience with wading out a little from the beach next to the pier?
