Point Symthe - 30/09 - AM

Post by StarrangerAU » Mon Oct 01, 2018 1:39 pm

Since my last trip to Inverloch I had always wondered how good the opposite side of the inlet would be as a fishing spot. So I dialled up Google Maps and had a good look, plus search around for information on its accessibility. For all intents, it seemed do-able to reach using graveled pathways so I was convinced I could expend a small effort to get to the location.

Parked the car at the end of Lee Road, and seeings it was an advertised pathway I figured I could take my cart. Let the journey begin.. ! now the first 30 mins was pretty much as expected, but the further I traversed, the more difficult the terrain became (sandy soil, ups & downs). All the while I thinking it cannot be much further, soon the pathway becomes a goat track with exposed roots, windbacks, fallen trees. Now I am not a physical chap, the results of a lifetime on the smokes, but golly gee this expedition was literally bringing me to me knees...fricking bleeding cart, what madness was this! 1 hour and 30 minutes later.... I arrive at my afore chosen destination.

Now I knew the water here would have some current behind it, but I was looking for those eddy holes where the fish sit waiting opportunistically. So I was very happy to walk up, around, & about searching. Most of where I identified, really was no more than 2-3 mtrs from shore, deep slow(ish), but with potential. Long(er) story short, after losing a wealth of tackle to snags and 4 hours later, zip, zero, de nada ! I enjoyed the scenery, the quiet, and the peacefulness but leaving empty handed was a bit disappointing.

So, my assessment of the location... would I return, Yes.... but next time I would travel very light and not take my whole flipping kit in a cart. I figure folk who like flicking plastics and such would do well covering ground and plenty of quite shoreline with deep holes. So its worth a bit of effort, if not for the scenery and abundant wildlife, but do take plenty of water, basic kit (food and first aid), and travel light.

I have had exactly that same experience in exactly that same spot with about 25kg on the back. Cool spot though.

Heaps of 1 arm bandit there on the low tide too from memory when I went around there via boat. Perfect for Whiting!
