Donut Kings and a broken rod

Post by DougieK » Fri Jan 18, 2019 4:02 pm

Went back to my little Gippsland ledge again yesterday. This time armed with some silver whiting to hang under a float. A crosswind that was 90 degrees off the forecast and heavy weed made the first couple of hours almost impossible to fish. Eventually on the start of the incoming the squid came on hard.

I ended up with 7 of these for the session with hoods between 20-35cm. Seriously nice bag of Calamari.

With balloons impossible because of the wind i elected to hang one out under a float searching again for the elusive kingfish. The current wasn't playing ball and my floats kept drifting back towards the ledge forcing me to redeploy them. My AFAW 6 and bait was getting the job done nicely while I was spinnning, and eventually got tired and decided to put a second float out on my Saltist. After 3 or 4 casts, I was repositioning a live squid and managed to overload the rod enough that this was the result.

Snapped clean at the join. That rod served me well for 4 years and has landed some amazing fish, i'm pretty sad to see it go out like this. I thought if I broke it it'd be in a fist fight with a big king or a GT or something. For the $200 it cost me on super special I got a great amount of use out of it.

Having been extremely impressed with my Assasin 963 shoregame (pe 2.5) I purchased a few months ago, I went down to Busted today, had a fondle of a heavier version, and came home with this bad boy.... (along with a new nomad from gonefishing)

Now running matching Assasins with Biomasters and 12 - 40 lb tasline as my light / heavy spin setups for rock fishing. Look badass together as well.

It's pretty challenging to find decently priced high quality gear you can actually pick up and handle before buying. Shout out to Frank at Busted for always giving solid advice and creating a place for high quality products in Australia. http://www.bustedfishing.com

That sucks. I hate breaking a rod. Happens but still sucks. Nice to get a newie though. Picked up a Daiwa Aird X 3 to 5 kg 7 footer the other day for $50. Tried it yesterday early before the heat, couple of hits on a plastic, no hook ups, but the action was nice and it felt nice in the hand. Flicks more like a 2 to 4 kg rod.

Big shame about the salty, still got mine sitting in the hallway at home, great, versatile rods

Those chromes he makes are an excellent salmon lure and I run tasline on pretty much all my spin gear now.

It'd probably have to become a one piece. I'm not lugging a 1 piece 9'6 around.
