Trawler aground at entrance

Pardon my boat ignorance but wouldnt one of the trawlers gadgets and gizmo's tell them that its a bad idea to attempt to go in there? also i thought they where banning trawlers from alot of those places down there.

Not sure what gadgets you mean. They have sounders plotters radar, same as most recreational vessels. They get information about the bar from the monthly surveys published on Gippsland Ports site.
No they are not banning trawlers. Fresh fish has to come from somewhere
The ten lake licences are being shut down, but that has nothing to do with offshore commercial fishing

They have sounders, plotters radar,

you would think one would tell them a depth reading then and figure out its getting to shallow.

Great info Re Tyred I think you mentioned they do bar crossing courses there.

I thought if you follow the leads you would be guided to the correct line through the bar, they should be easy to see if it was dark. I only cross during the day when I go out there, you can usually see where the waves are breaking or standing up when going out, then follow the same line on your GPS when coming back in. Not so good for the trawlers because they are slow, and if they are out for a few days the channel can move around if there is a big swell. Also sometimes there are sightseeing boats parked in the channel entrance which can force you to take a less preferred line coming off the bar into the entrance.

The Hewardia is still there and a towline is attached. Salvage may take a considerable time.

Trawler was towed off last week. The dredge has been working on the build up of sand and the leads have been moved back to the normal green light inline with flagstaff.
Still do not turn to the west as soon as you exit the rock walls as there is a shallow area outside of the dredged area along the beach to the west of the entrance.
