Thanks for the nice feedback mate. Yep Lake tyres has some nice crabs in there too , at the mouth to the lake on the 90 mile beach has heaps also. Another area where water runs in and out during tides changes, bringing with it food , and a great area for crabs.

Out of the 90 mile beach area , the lake Tyers entrance and the entrance to the lake system in Lakes entrance produces some of the best crabs around.

Although , I have caught plenty all along the 90 mile beach while surf fishing, some nice big ones too. I usually just walk waist height into the surf and toss the hoops nets into the surf , tie them up to a stick stuck in the sand on the beach, fish away for a while , and check them every 10 to 15 minutes. There is always some crabs in them. You'll get them at any other surf beaches also such as gunners etc etc.

Or you can put some scraps / my personal favourite cheap crab bait is a full raw chicken carcass / in a hoop net or a catch net , drag it around on the bottom waist height in the surf to draw in the crabs, and scoop up the crabs with a normal fishing net (net with a handle).

Easier to just use the hoop nets though imo, and they keep the crabs away from your surf rod bait too while bait fishing.

Cheers , Rick.

From DPI

Closed season for hoop nets

From 15 September to 15 November (inclusive) you must not use a hoop net in any marine water other than Port Phillip Bay, Western Port, the Gippsland Lakes or any inlet of the sea.
