Lake BellField 2/11/15
Spent the weekend camping at the grampians over the cup weekend and managed to get out for 2 hrs on dusk on monday night with the boy for a fish. I rarely fish freshwater these days and it has been probably 15 yrs since i landed my last redfin.
What I noticed about the lake was that the water was quite muddy, there was alot of structure in close to the bank, and some green algae slime on the bottom. In other words it looked pretty much like like snag central, but fishy.
Well it proved to be as such. Started off with a pink tassie devil on one rod and worms in a paternosta style rig on the other rod with the smallest circle hook i had. After about 12 casts the pink tassie devil got snagged. The rod with the worms was getting consistent nibbles, but that got snagged twice after casting i could feel the sinker bumping on the fallen wood logs as it dropped. After losing the tassie devil i swapped over to a red / black celta spinner after about 10 casts i hit the first redfin which was about 20 cm in length, nothing big, but something. A short time later the boy got some nibbles on the worm rod and pulled in the biggest redfin ever, 5 - 7 cm's lol Shortly after the celta spinner got snagged and we called it a day as it was also starting to get dark.
All in all a good little session to get back into the freshwater scene.

It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

I used to fish Bellfield quite a bit back in the day. A good trout water if you know the spots, but full of lots of stunted Redfin...

I had a bit of a look there yesterday arvo and noticed a few people were fishing. Pissed off I didnt throw a rod in for a quick session. certainly looked fishy.
When I saw the title, I thought it was about my kids throwing rocks into the water along the bank from the guys fishing.

Hi boys and girls, long time lurker first time caller.
Have been fishing bellfield a bit lately(kayak),looking for the rumoured 50+cm redfin that are in there(have seen pics).
Looking towards the wall. Two weeks ago i scored a nice by-catch of a chinook salmon 56cm 1.8kg.There are big fish in there but you need to be on the water and fish deep. And just for good measure heres a pic of another place i like to spend some time at.Wartook reservoir. Living 20 mins from the grampians im pretty spoilt for lakes up here. Phil.
