Grampians...again.

Post by wokka1 » Thu May 30, 2013 7:53 pm

I know, more of the same. Things weren't looking that flash for the bay this week and the wind forecast was good for the Grampians area so I lobbed on Ma and Pa Kettle again and hit up the lakes.

Caught up with a couple of Vyakkers on Wendouree Monday morning, lost 1 and landed 1 brown, mid 40's trolling the drop at the edge of the rowing lanes.

Further along the road I launched onto Greenhill lake near Ararat. Crap, basically. The level has dropped a few metres and the deepest water I found was about 2.1 m. A muddy launch and I only stayed an hour. I reckon about 85 % of the current water surface area would be less than 1.2 m deep and the birds are probably the only ones catching fish, at least during daylight hours.

Tuesday I attempted to repeat my reed captures of a couple weeks ago at Wartook for nada in close. I lost 1 yak side between the ramp and the wall before heading for the lee side of the island (the wind was picking up) where I landed a decent brown and dropped a couple others while trolling parallel to the island bank. Slogged it into the wind to check out the old caretakers house then headed back to the wall area where I dropped another. The fish won the day 4 to 1

Lunch on the island

Wednesday back to my fav Toolondo. The barometer was up and the fish were active right from the go, chasing minnows along the surface. Took me a while to hook my first, a brown around the 48 cm mark. Another hook up followed soon after but the 4 lb leader separated a couple of feet from the lure, I suspect following damage during the previous landing...a rookie error

Back in among the trees on the lee shore I trolled a plastic in an area where the fish were active, got touched up on one pass then turned and hooked another brown covering the same ground. Trolled some more then tied up to a tree and threw out some peeled prawn tail under a bubble float. I'd been hearing that it had been productive in the lakes so I figured i'd have a crack and whatdya know, it ain't just a good gummy bait boys and girls !

In a bit over 30 minutes 3 big rainbows had hovered the prawn down their gullet and I had bagged at Toolondo again. I felt like it was cheating, fishing downwind with no slack in the line and a circle hook it was sit back and let the fish do the rest.

Great video mate. Looks like you had an enjoyable time as we slave over deadlines back here @ work!

Some nice salmon action with one spitting out the hook during flight!

Im trying to fight the urge of getting a stradic but lately where ever i look, i can see one! They haunting me!!

The specimens at the end of the video look very tasty!! :Dribble: :dinner:
