Daylight boofing

My original plans were to head up to the high country mid week to beat the crowds and do a bit of fly fishing. However, I got rung up to do some work and so those plans went up in smoke! Not wanting to fight the traffic or camp shoulder to shoulder I elected to camp and fish for a couple of days in some smaller streams between Bendigo and Numurkah that don't get so much angling attention like the Murray, Goulburn etc. I just followed my nose looking at smaller waterways I had never fished before. Some were running quite hard with irrigation flows.

I caught a number of cod on surface lures during daylight hours, particularly when it clouded over yesterday arvo, in the 45 to 60 cm range, which were a lot of fun when you can see them come up for the boof! From what I have seen if the water is a bit discoloured they hit the surface lures even better than at twilight after daybreak for the next couple of hours. Similarly, if clouds come over they will become active even at 2 pm when they are normally not interested. If you get boofed once and they don't follow up, changing surface lures can induce another strike.

You can catch them off the top ib daylight if you run your surface lure close to ambush spots:

Finally, a pic where you can see where carp have been grazing the stream bed (I saw them at it, but they took off for the pic). You can see all the dimples in the mud from their sucking:

You can catch cod off the top almost anywhere if you put the effort in. I had never fished these areas before and in all spots I got boofs and in most I caught fish.

Good report, the backwaters are often overlooked, great spots if you want peace and quiet, some good advice on getting some surface action, I have neglected this technique with cod but it seems everyone raves about it, so may have to give it a go this season

Top effort might have to try some surface lure work for COD

Nice work, I've been trying large surface flies for cod on my last couple of trips to the Murray, I should check out some backwaters.
