Texas at the Doon

Post by Texas » Thu Nov 15, 2018 1:01 pm

After a leisurely 2 hour drive, I arrived early afternoon on Friday
Set up camp and went for a fish
Dave has just caught his 58cm Yellowbelly and I stationed myself about 10mtrs away where a lone tree was poking out of the water, a short distance from the shore.
Got out an old solid glass rod with 30lb line in a paternoster rig. Baited it with worms and cast it to about 5ft lhs of tree. All good.
Then it was time for the JW port hacking (A long whippy rod) with 8lb line and a running sinker. When I went to bait it up, I noticed the line was wrapped around the rod and generally not where it should be. 15mins and a few choice words later, I cut the line and rejoined it.
Finally it was baited with worms and ready to go. I only needed to give it a little whip, so the bait landed in front of the tree. A gentle whip and bang, straight into the f@#%king tree. You could see the worms spinning around a branch. So a break off and start again. My next cast was beautiful and landed about 2ft to the rhs of the tree.
After a couple of beers and no action, I thought it best to check my bait, especially as there had been reports of a few small reddies around. Well, this single tree actually had mates. Two submerged logs radiated from the tree at about 30° to the truck and towards the shore. Yes on retrieving, both lines became snagged and had to be busted off. And so, that was the pattern for the rest of the day - some into to tree, some caught on the logs and some were cast and retrieved without incident.
Oh fish ??? One roach the size of my hand.
Saturday and things were going to change. The wind had died down and it was a lovely 21° (felt like 30°). The action, at best, could be called slow, I did not lose a bait. After 1/2 A dozen shandy's, maybe more, I got out the secret weapon - mussels - yes saltwater thawed and smelly mussels (did you know saltwater mussels turn white in fresh water). On went the mussels, then yabby and mussel, then worm and mussel, all to no avail.
Sunday arrived, I had to go to Mansfield, on the way back I dropped into Brack's brigde for a picnic lunch. (The bitumen is 80kph and the dirt is 100kph, go figure). Tossed an unweighted yabby in downstream of the brigde. Caught zilch.
Fished the Doon that afternoon for the same result as Saturday.
Bloody lovely weather, majestic views, but no "real" fish.
That tree will produce I know it

At least you persevered! I have had days fishing in channels where it has been dead. The only saving grace is I am not losing rigs as there are not that many snags. It gets frustrating when the fishing is not only slow but is troublesome as well.
