13/04/2019 Goulburn River Report

After browsing Google maps, I decided on a spot along the Goulburn River just out of Shepparton.
Couple bumpy dirt roads to get in but nothing the ute (or a Camry) couldn't handle.

Found a spot that lead down to the bank and set up for a fish there.
Had two light weight rods with me, both spooled with mono. Set one up with Nathalia giant worms and threw a lure with the other. Lure proved to be futile so I made that a bait rod as well.

Not long later, one of the rods went off, and I pulled in a nice ~30cm Murray Cod. Didn't put up much of a fight.

This was followed by a small carp.

I brought some old cheese along with me not thinking much of it. I decided to give it a go (I've never used cheese as a bait before). After a couple minutes, my rod doubled over and I pulled in what is currently my biggest cod so far. I didn't have a ruler with me so I had to use my leather man. It measure 6 leatherman rulers which equates to roughly ~50cm. It fought hard but I eventually got it onto the bank. Such a beautiful fish to see and hold. I unhooked and got it back in as quick as possible.

The rest of the session was quiet bar one tiny cod(?).

Perhaps fellow users can help me out here - should I move to a different spot after an hour of nothing when bait fishing?

Well done mate. 50cm is good, looks like in healthy condition too.
I'm no expert but I heard the bigger the tree/log the bigger the fish, if you want to get the biggest fish in the area then pick the biggest tree/log.

I'd say you're right except it becomes snag galore.
I had to rig up way too many times today thanks to snags.

Yeah, that's how it is fishing for natives, they love the snags. I reckon I've lost $400+ worth or lures and rigs chasing for cod and yellowbelly.
If you don't cast close enough to the snags, less chance getting them. But they do come out in low light condition.

Excellent effort ploh!!!!!!! In regards to moving if things are slow, it may not hurt. You seem to be very keen so you may as well be pro-active. Myself, I am just happy to be out there so I usually stay...sometimes this is reflected by my results but on saying that, I have endured slow times in one spot for it to then come alive at some point.

Fisheries suggest you use heavier gear for cod. From memory you are just starting out but at some point you should think about upgrading. This may also reduce the amount of gear you lose to fish in snags (where the fish are). It will also prevent you losing a good sized cod...the way you are going it is only a matter of time before you tangle with one. What lb line do you use now?
