River Blackfish : how big is big?

G'day folks!

A mate has sent me a pic of a 48cm blackie he caught tonight, which he's thinking of putting on the wall. 48cms seems big to me, but admittedly I don't know a great deal about this species. Just wondering how big is big when it comes to blackies? What's considered a trophy sized fish?

Up to 600 mm and 5.5 kg, commonly to 300 mm, fish South of the Great Dividing range, especially in South Eastern Victoria often grow to much larger size than their Northern brethren.

I saw the same on google too but google also seems to think redfin grow to 10kgs!
I'm looking for facts/feedback from real fisherman. Thanks anyway bud.

48 Would be the biggest i've ever seen.

Thats a ripper I have never seen one that big. The tv show hook line and sinker did a show on them once with a guy who fishes for them regular check out that episode he may say the biggest he has caught

I've only ever seen one bigger and that was on a forum (might have been this one but I don't think it was) and it went 52cms.

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far. I'd be thinking the drought has affected the state's rivers/creeks so much the last few decades that blackies of this size would be a rarity in recent times. I'm getting the impression they may be on par with redfin, where a 50cm model is considered a huge fish.
