I got permission from the owner of this pic to post it as I thought it would be a good reference to those who don't know the difference between the two fish.
Trout Cod on the left, cheers davo

Trout Cod / Murray Cod
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Re: Trout Cod / Murray Cod
Thanks Dave
To see them together helps heaps.
If the Bunyip leaves my bait (& me) alone, I might catch one.
Cheers

Re: Trout Cod / Murray Cod
Thanks Davo,
seeing them side by side makes all the difference,l have only caught a handful of murray cod but sometimes l wondered if one might have been a trout cod,l feel a bit stupid because there are quite a few differences between the two.

Re: Trout Cod / Murray Cod
Nice side by side pic.
As you can see having an eye stripe does not make a fish a trout cod - you can seen on the right that Murray cod has a stripe which they commonly do, when under 5 kg. Similarly, people say that trout cod don't have spots on their head - in fact larger trout cod can be heavily spotted on the head.
Bigger Murray cod/trout cod can be a bit trickier to for the inexperienced to pic but once you have seen a few its not very difficult to identify them.
In this news paper story the bloke in the pic is supposed to be holding an 87 cm Murray cod - it in fact was a trout cod:

The simple test is when the mouth is closed if the top jaw is significantly longer than the bottom jaw then it is either a trout cod or a 'mongrel cod', which is a hybrid cross between a trout cod and a Murray cod.
If the top jaw is longer let it go.
Best Wishes

Re: Trout Cod / Murray Cod
Personally trout cod doesn't sound right, I would prefer they named it " Murrays cousin " seeing they look so alike..
