MACCA BREEDING THIS YEAR

Post by Paulanderson » Sat Nov 18, 2017 2:05 pm

Hi All

I asked Vic Fisheries what was happening with Macca breeding this year and the response is copied below. Native Fish Australia (Vic) are also planning to breed Maccas this year and have been collecting brood stock from the Yarra (although at least initially it has been slow going) and it would seem from a few individuals that must have some fish. It will be interesting to see just what the freshwater fisheries management referred to below plan has to say. When compared with most species Maccas are quite a challenge to breed in hatcheries but it can be done.

Paul

Hi Paul,

The VFA have a long established program to breed and stock Macquarie perch at Snobs Creek. This will continue this year and brood stock collection starts next week.

We are soon to release a freshwater fisheries management plan that identifies the need to expand efforts to breed and stock Macquarie perch, trout cod and Catfish.

Happy to discuss further

The news from Native Fish Australia (Vic) is that they have sufficient brood stock, have their first fertilized eggs and should have fry in about a week - well done NFA! Lets hope they can grow them on a bit to help survival rates when released.
