The old timers used things such as parrots and centipedes. Apart from bardie grubs and yabbies the most popular baits were a carp (goldfish), slipperies (blackfish) and the dressed marrow out of a bullock. Time and time again I have been told the marrow was the best bait. I suppose it has the look of a grub with the fatyness of the cheese we use these days. Small cod and catfish were also very popular as a bait before the size limits came in.

Cod will eat anything. There are accounts of cod attacking very big animals including a horse's leg.

Rod Harrison once came up with a definition of Murray cod: 'Eats everything and tolerates nothing'.

I've seen them caught on cheese, chicken, and bacon. I see the Compleat Angler stores have packaged Chickens Hit (no, not chicken **** lol) which is supposed to be the bomb.

The funny thing is yabbies catch more cod than any live bait

Surface lures would nt be far behind.

Yep you are right. Egg(ish) shaped and the smell trail in the water must be fairly strong
