Suburban Creek Fishing 30/9/2019

Post by Longshankhooks » Mon Sep 30, 2019 8:58 pm

30/9
Today I fished one of the tributary of plenty river, explored different places and walked along the edges of the creek. The water wasn’t very clear, maybe due to the rain in the past weeks. Anyways, chucked on a fresh earth worm dug up in my backyard in the early morning and just flicked out in the middle of the creek... hoping for anything, carp, freshwater eel, redfin. Took a while but managed to hook on to a native freshwater eel.

Fought like crazy and peeled off drag from my 1-3kg rod from Kmart and I managed to pull it up to the grass. It was very lively and danced in the grass.

Wow nice catch mate, would've been a slippery bugger and prob wrapped up your rig. Tried eating one once and never again, it was like having a mouth full of oil. Yuck!!! Heard they're great if smoked but interested to know how you cooked it?

Cheers guys. The way we cooked it was we sliced it up and steamed it Chinese style. Doesn’t take long to cook!

Some delis, fishmongers, etc sell smoked eels. I recommend this recipe: https://www.foodrepublic.com/recipes/co ... ts-recipe/ It might tell you whether or not you want to bother catching and smoking your own.

Can they be pan fried? Obviously yes, but is there any prep work required to get it suitable (like soaking in water) for tasty eating?

I've had these on the BBQ before (grilled), the trick was to purge it for a few days in fresh water.
