Cod hooks
Hi all. I'm stocking up for Cod opening and looking for advice on hooks.
Size. Mostly I have been told around the 5/0 mark. What do others use?
Shape. I'm leaning towards octopus circle for catch and release. Suggestions?
Bait will be varied but will be trying cheese, yabbies, scrub worms and shrimp. Does bait affect the type of preferred hook?
thanks in advance
Steve

Re: Cod hooks
I do believe you should use different hooks depending upon bait.
Baitholders work well for Yabbies and Scrubworms.
Wide Gapes are great for Shrimp.
Circles will work with Chesse.

Re: Cod hooks
Personlly go circles on everything for bait fishing - for cod i keep a range between 2/0-7/0 and match to the bait being used.

Re: Cod hooks
thanks for that. I assume with the bait holders you need to strike (as opposed to wait with the circles). What about the wide gape hooks?

Re: Cod hooks
For cod i think its the best- big mouth, snatch and turn style take. Can go big to put off the potential by catches where you are fishing and it wont overly deter the smaller ones - imo and experience at least. Just took me 2 years to learn how to strike on them hahawestvic wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2019 1:00 pmthis has been my method i the past year or two (my entire cod chasing experience) but have often wandered if there was a better wayhappyfriggincamper wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2019 10:11 amPersonlly go circles on everything for bait fishing - for cod i keep a range between 2/0-7/0 and match to the bait being used.

Re: Cod hooks
Wide Gapes you can wait like Circles.
Great shape also for Banana Prawns

Re: Cod hooks
I use 2/0 - 4/0 circle hooks, I have landed a 97cm on a 3/0, cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Re: Cod hooks
Yes mate, I generally don't change much at all, scrubbed on a 2/0, yabbies and cheese, 2/0 - 3/0 , big yabbies 4/0, cheers davo
