Surf Salmon 21/06
Surf Salmon 21/06
Hi Team,
Headed up the coast in search of some salmon on Saturday, 21st. I've been struggling as of late to get onto fish. Decided with good winds, swells and a matching high tide & sunset the surf would be my best bet. Took 1 Surf, 12', paternoster, chicken/squid/pilchard as bait. Also took one smaller and lighter spin rod just incase good numbers came past (didn't end up using in the end). Got on the sand few hours before sunset. Fisho's around were whispering about a pretty successful day before. Wasn't as good though on the Saturday. A few smaller species caught around me, I managed a little fella too (i'd say about 25cm) within the first few casts. Then just before dark, as a I was adjusting my rod holder (rod in hand) something decent took the bait. Pictured below. Was great fun and honestly made the day all worthwhile. Popped into Geelong on the way home for a few small flatties, all went back though. Not enough meat on the smaller ones and I'd already caught tonight's dinner anyway..

Nice fish! Will they hit lures after dark with the same enthusiasm they show during the day?

From personal experience I've found they disappear pretty quickly after dark Jim, have only caught the smaller species in the rivers and the occasional rogue one. Nearly all the Salmon Fisho's that were there on Saturday, both bait and lure packed up straight after dark.. I'm happy to be corrected though..Rod Bender wrote:Nice fish!
