Fishing Report - Apollo Bay Pier - Sun 20/8 - AM

6.00AM - 2.00PM
High Tide 10am'ish, scattered light W winds

Target species for the morning was Salmon, but clearly they had other plans for most of the day. The set line 20+ mtrs out pinged a good few times but the hands weren't quick enough to set the hook. Did manage to land a few 40cm Barracoutas instead of the Salmon, but they were promptly returned to the drink, I cant stand the smell of them.

On the plus side, did do well with a decent haul of Tommy Roughs which is just as well the missus quite likes them. All caught on pilly strips with light gear.

Excitement for the day ....Spotted surface chop which seemed to be about 5-8 mtrs diameter about 60/70mtrs directly out from the pier which prompted small prayers for it to work itself closer to the set lines. Ended up disappointed as it vanished after 10 minutes.

By the end of the day, developed a theory, bites came on when the ocean swell came up, as soon as it went flat, the bites tapered off somewhat. A little winds is not a bad thing I guess.

Notes for fisher families, This is a reasonable'ish pier, young ones will do well on the ocean side of the pier or marina side amongst the boats. Bonus viewing of a 2.5 mtr ray which usually glides in around about lunchtime, as does the occasional seal (not today though). Has a cleaning station and running water too.

Cheers folks,
Star

.... and you could be correct me thinks...

A check of my species app indicates you are correct. I'll have to be more careful in future, for the record I thought they were Tommys.

Nice work mate. The easiest way to tell Tommy's from juvenile salmon is the scales...if they're rough, they're tommy's.
