St Leonards Easter '17

Post by Trumpeter » Mon Apr 17, 2017 8:34 pm

Hi All

Just back from an extended, 6 day Easter break with the family at St Leonards. The whiting fishing was a little slower than I would've liked but the quality of fish caught was pretty good with several very fat specimens well over 40cm, good sized Flathead were available and there were plenty of squid around. I caught and released one small Gummy which managed to get past the all Banjo's, some places the seabed must be carpeted with them.
My first trip out was early Wednesday, the water was still dirty from all the rain and full of weed, caught a couple of kg's, a flatty and 5 squid. I could've fished on caught the limit with the Cala's but 5 was plenty for us. The next trip was Thursday arvo, fishing the last of the run out tide produced 3 kg's and 3 good Flatties -and a token small squid which took a jig I always hang out the back whilst anchored. Saturday morning proved to be the best trip out. The high tide was at 5am so I motored out from the ramp at 4.30 to my spot to catch the start of the run out and within 10 mins of dropping my lines over the side I had two nice ting on board. By 6.30-7 I'd caught 8, the girth on the larger ones was incredible, I've never seen them so fat. After that I got a Flatty, an LJ and some Couta which I kept for future gummy baits and burley. There were heaps of boats coming out and I was content enough with the catch so decided to head in before the ramp got too busy. So all up it was a great relaxing break with some ok fishing and some memorable seafood meals, can't wait to get back!

First trip out.

Thanks fellas
Hi Denis there's some big ones there I pulled the hooks out of a couple before I could get them to the net, I think I needed larger jigs than 3.5 with bigger prongs.

Well done. Now that's why we fish. A good time relaxing, good memories and some good meals are the bonus. Thanks for sharing.

Sounds good, I'll be back down again for the Anzac day "long w/end" if I can swing the Monday with work.
