portarlington mon 12th

Post by Nude up » Mon Nov 12, 2018 8:10 pm

A bit slow to get moving this morning launched around 630 at point richards. I intended to head over to the spoil grounds as I headed out I could see around 20 boats up around steampacket channel side by side. I sounded around the drop off and saw a few arches so I anchored up put the baits out and started to burley.
It wasnt long till the flathead found me plague proportions small ones then a couple of banjos I had some gar fish out which went for a run not a snapper but something big not a ray I started to gain line back then the hooks pulled damm.
I was busy baiting my rods and removing that green weed that seems to plague this area for about 2 months of the year its a real pain. I headed in around 2pm I ended ip with around 14 flathead smallest was 30 cm not what I was after but a tasty bycatch.

Nice Nude up. The flatties have been a good size this year.

I got a call on the weekend, My friends fished the breakwall saturday night one of them dropped two reds ( hooks pulled ) at his feet as they were about to be netted, he estimates they were around 70 cm give or take a bit in the brightness of his spot light, I heard he cried on the trip home in the early hours of the morning, I was suppose to meet them there but other things got in the way.
He who has the most fishing rods WINS ! :ts:

Thanks for the report Nude up - that looks like a nice feed of Flatties! I'd love to know what pulled the hooks. That fine green weed is a patience tester at the moment.

That lovely green slimey weed is how it is in this area at this time of year, right through past Pt Wilson and through the "paddock". I find fishing without lead helps the baits not bury into the crap on the bottom and sit on top. If the boat awns it pulls the baits deeper into the slime. Turning over the baits is key. Otherwise a combo of lead and floatation in a rig can help keep baits "just" off the bottom, if made up correctly. Last time I tried that trick I nearly got spooled from a reel carrying over 300m of 10kg line. I locked up and it come to the surface, then a cupla solid tail wacks against mono and "snap" she goes. Bronzie or thresher would be my guess. Not ideal in a 3.8m tinny, but I'm game.
At least you come back with a nice feed Nude Up, but it just isn't quite the same if your target is red. Better luck next trip bud ;)
