If you would like to learn more about surfskiing in the ocean check out a few clips:

Below is a bloke (multiple world champion) Oscar Chalupsky poetry in motion.

Looks like fun the open ocean conditions would be very different to that of PPB yesterday though.

A relatively shallow body of water with that wind would not be challenging even for the most experienced thrill seeker. When I saw the kayak my thoughts were like that of others that they were experienced and that the snapped kayak happened due to large short period wind chop.

They would have known that’s a risk and the consequence would be high it shouldn’t be taken for granted that the coastguard is there to save “extreme sports enthusiasts”.

I’m glad they got in safely but I also feel that if you live by the gun be prepared to die by it.

Ocean Racing skis, busted one looks similar to an epic. So sit on tops.
Cheater ?? :)
No it wasn't me - when I first heard the news that a couple of kayakers had got in to trouble I thought the same what were they doing out today
but after seeing the racing ski my guess they had gone out to practice

Laneends knows what it's like to even paddle one of these match sticks on even flat water as he now has a 6 meter racing ski
the guys that can stay on them are normally fairly experienced paddlers - but of cause we can all get into trouble and if it was gear failure ( ski broken in half ) that may have been some of the problem

I like this Video on down wind as it give some in sight into the sport and why someone may have be practicing

Keep in mind, short of structural failure these things dont swamp or sink, and paddlers are leashed to them. So if they fall out they just climb back on and continue. Paddlers will be dressed for submersion. They weigh between 10 & 20kg typically
