Fresh water fishing at night

Post by trebbalzzz » Tue Jul 28, 2015 11:26 am

Hey guys

I was wondering is there much point to fishing fresh water at night? Is it very productive for species like trout and Redfin or more or less pointless?

Cheers Damo

Redfin go to sleep I'm pretty sure, not much point chasing them after dark.

No idea about the others

I have no experience but a couple of very good anglers on here do 99% of their cod fishing at night.

Seen a few videos of trout caught at night. Blackfish are more active and of course cod still eat.

Don't cod go from waiting in ambush during the day to more actively hunting at night?

There's a vid on youtube where the guys catch a few trout at night in bullen merri around the jetty, and yes cod move freely at night out of their holes / caves looking for a feed, most cod I've caught have been on dusk into the night.
He who has the most fishing rods WINS ! :ts:

Thanks for the replies guys, I have never targeted cod but some I would definitely want to do in the very near future. Is bullen merri a stocked lake? If so would It be assume that there would be a chance in other stocked lakes

Winter cod are pretty tough going at night. The theory is, they slow right down because there's a shortage of food, and they have built up a large fat reserve to counter this. The yabbies are mostly buried in the mud to protect against their winter soft shell, the baitfish aren't scattered, but schooled up in holes. Also, the bugs and terrestrials aren't around for surface feeding.

In saying all of that...the biggest cod are caught during winter! Spinnerbaits or deep-diving hardbodys account for most winter cod. Continually casting a spinnerbait, deep past a big old cod, lazing in an eddy behind a snag, will eventually cause a territorial strike, rather than a feeding strike. It takes a lot of casts and lost lures, but no sense casting where the fish aren't.

That's how I get my winter cod, but I'm sure a live yabbie in the right spot would be in with a good chance.

Have caught plenty of Redfin and the odd Yella at night on scrubbies at Lake Eppalock, nothing on lures or plastics though.
