Lake trout bait tips

G’day everyone,

I’m heading out to lauriston reservoir here in central vic on Friday targeting trout. I’ve heard of people having success using salted white fish, and so my question is what exactly is that? Is it just any white fish that you salt and cut up? Also how is it rigged, and are trout likely to be feeding closer to the shore or further out?

Any other tips for lake fishing at this time of year would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Sounds like you may mean "whitebait"? It works on the rainbows, but not the browns. If you're baitfishing, you would be better off using something more natural, such as worms or mudeyes. It would probably be wise to cast one out, and keep one in close, to cover both bases.

Trout I recently caught from a dam were full of mud eyes and yabbies. Not sure if the lake fish will be feeding on the same stuff but it might Be worth trying to get some of either of those baits?

grab some powerbait lemon twist seems to work well under a float

be worth casting out blade spinners, blade lures (vibes), tassie devil style lures, small minnow lures if you have any.
worm's will be the simplest bait, try a running sinker down to a swivel with about 1m leader to a small hook.
you could also try casting out a worm unweighted or under a float.

Thoma-multiple-s I had to google Lauriston reservoir because I had no idea where it was. A few tips for lake trout is look for edges or bays on the windward side cast towards the ages of stirred up water and clear or look for windlanes. Trout will use these areas as feeding paths I would set up baits then use lures nearby such as xraps, tassie devils or celtas.

Do you find this works with stocked Browns as well as rainbows?

Powerbait generally works best on stocked fish, a lot of the time wild fish won't touch it in my experience.

I found that maggots work well in all the Kyneton lakes, but it has been a while since I've given the Lauriston much of a go. Scrub worms are another bait to keep in mind.
