Rainy session at Albert Park - report

Post by croe04 » Sun Jun 16, 2019 6:18 pm

Hi all

Headed down to Albert Park lake for a quick session with the old man today from 3:15 till 5:00, chasing ep's, yellas and trout. Water level has risen a tad with the rain but weeds are still a bit hard to avoid. Water was pretty murky, couldn't see past about 10cm deep. Eager to try the new hardbodies i bought so I predominantly used those. Wasn't expecting too much as it was pretty cold and I presumed the fishing would be slow.

Gear used
Lures: Green and gold Veltic Spinner bought in NZ, Atomic Hardz 40mm bream shad in Gold Wolf (not made anymore) and Cultiva Rip'N 65mm Minnow in brown trout colour
Rod n Reel: Shakespeare wild series flathead 7ft rod with Jarvis walker Covert II 3000 reel
Line: Rapala STC 9lb monofilament

First spot we fished was a bust, too shallow and weedy getting hung up on every cast. Swans also took too much interest in my lures so we moved on.

Second spot i chucked on a surface lure and was flicking it about for a bit when all of a sudden fish kept rising and making a commotion on the surface about 3 metres in front of me, so I switched to the cultiva minnow and sure enough about 3 casts later landed a solid 33cm male rainbow. Cast it a few more times with no luck so I switched to the atomic hardz bream shad and almost instantly hooked into another rainbow. The fishing got much more hot around 4:00, with every other cast bringing a nice fish, all of which were very healthy and extremely aggressive for a stocked lake. Ended catching 9 in total (8 for me, 1 for dad) in one spot in about 1 and a half hours with another 4 getting hooked but spitting it before we could land them. All the fish caught were returned quickly back to fight another day.

Biggest fish caught at 33cm. Not a great photo though as we were rushing to get him back in the water

Smallest one we caught, about 15cm, still had his juvenile markings on him but fought like a champ

Another healthy rainbow, not as long but quite chubby and had a lot of kick in him

Surprisingly my most productive trout fishing session i've ever had to date and at Albert Park of all places. Overall great fun despite how freezing it was, I'll be eager to head back soon

Noth'n like having a fishing session with Dad, well done Croe :-D

And with a fish every other cast, that is one awesome session, well you probably did most of the heavy lifting but at least the Ol' Boy had a crack too and got one.

You're right too, healthy looking fish. That top one should be a Hungry Jacks Whopper , , , , it takes two hands to handle a Whopper :-D

Cheers Bug

Great work mate. Is it easy finding a park down at Albert Park?

Today was quiet because of the weather and the time of day, and there is a pretty big car park by MSAC but it fills up when people come to have a jog around the lake or play sport, especially when the weather is nice.
