Particular rivers where trout spawn are totally closed to fishing during the spawning period. You may also not be allowed to target trout in other streams as well - I'm not really sure on this as it is not relevant for me. This ban is lifted in early September therefore the season is 'open' then.

You can fish lakes all year round and you are correct - Winter is a great time for trout fishing. The rivers provide great fishing during Spring, however, they do tend to slow down when the weather heats up. The Goulburn downstream of Eildon will be an exception to this as it has cold water from Eildon.
thanks

Unfortunately they are not made anymore! Norstream make a replica (Insect Spinner) - I have used it and it certainly works on trout. It does seem to twist the line also, more than other spinners do. They are stocked in Tackleworld here so may be standard in all Tackleworld stores.
thanks
Jim

Those Norstream Insect spinners are crap. I got a heap of them a while back and tested them out..

Well this should be interesting then, as I've had 8 pairs of 3gm Norstream insect spinners sent to me to from a tackle importer to test out in the rivers here in Tassie. Noticed that they're made in China too. I remember when Celta's that were originally made in France and are now produced in China, they had a problem with blade spin, the blade would either flutter or not even spin. I think that has since been rectified now, not sure as I don't use them. So this should be an interesting test with these insect spinners. I still have two of the orginal Jensen insect spinners and they weren't to bad and work reasonably well. Soon as the rivers drop here I'll give these insect spinners a go and see how they work.
cheers
Adrian

I tried them soon after I lost my last Jensen Insect spinner! :-D The place I was using them had reasonable to strong flow from memory if that matters. I certainly caught trout on them, perhaps at the time the trout were hitting everything. What I do remember is they seemed to twist the line a lot more than other spinners so I gave up using them.
thanks

If you want to copy and then paste the following into google it will bring up the trout and salmon regulations for Victoria if that's any help. Very informative site also has maps etc on it of rivers with regulations. This may http, may take you direct to that forum.

All types of lures work. It just depends which ones you have most faith in. Tassie devils are underrated in larger rivers. As your first response mentioned it's hard to fault vibrax spinners worked downstream across the current.

Gillies had a hopper spinner back in the day which used to work a treat (better than Jensen insects IMO, although the design was basically the same).

Also hard to go past Ecogear SX40s. Yes they are a Bream lure, but work wonders on the Trout as well.

Support Aussie locals and buy a few of the bullet minnows. They are tinny but I have caught my biggest trout on them in some of the smallest of streams. The grey and clear looking one is the one I have done most of my fishing on but I have caught trout and Redfin on each and every one.

Good luck.
