Interesting...
It still looks similar to an aussie salmon, but the most likely option would maybe be a yellowtail scad (aka yakka) but I've never seen or heard of one from the barwon.

Yep, looks mostly like a Yakka, but the tail is not yellow enough and "darty" enough in the pic. Although the head and body look it.

A couple of times I tried cooking them , they were bled as soon as landed, gutted and put on ice bricks in esky straight away. Still had the brown parts of flesh, which tastes really bad. I'm pretty sure the brown parts are parts of body that didn't bleed out completely, but all you can do is cut its throat and hope evrything leaks out.
Comparing whiteness of flathead flesh and Salmon is like day and night...Salmon fillets are greyish/brown. :whoh:

Haha I did a quick google search for yakka, yup I think that's it. That curvy lateral line is pretty distinctive. Maybe thats why it tasted good :D So I guess I still haven't caught a mature aussie salmon yet lols

The schools of bigger salmon will occasionally come through the mouth and up to the sheepwash, then turn around and come back. You have to be there at the right time though.
When they are there, it's great fun. Especially with metal lures. The only downside is the hundreds of other people trying to cast in the exact same spot.

I've never thought of eating yakkas, too good of a bait for that!

Aussie salmon supposed to taste good if smoked. So worth to keep them and smoke them. Else, use it as bait for something bigger :)

I never said Salmon is as good as flathead, lol.
But When i bleed em, i snap the neck and bury em head first in the sand. I never seem to have a problem with em.
But no i'd never say its better than Flathead or the best fish to eat.
