Had some fun on the surf got a couple of small salmon and a big ray then off to Artillery rocks on the falling tide, 1 wrasse, 1 leather jacket, 5 salmon ( 1 of them about 500g) good fun. Chicken, squid, pippis all worked pillies not a tap

Hi all, I was down at Lorne Pier last weekend 18/19Oct 2014 with my missus and old dad, we were all having a go.
Over the 2 days between is we caught an array of salmon, whiting, and 1 what looked like a wobbly gong shark, it had the shape of a port Jackson but it was a muddy brown colour about 70cm long. We let him go as we thought it might be protected.
The best one was the one that got away, I had my surf rod set up cast out about 50m off the mid pier towards the surf, it was like on the TV with all of a sudden a screaming reel and I could not beleive how fast I could see the line moving in the water. Whatever it was that hooked up swam toward the start of the pier. I had the drag on hard and was making progress reeling it in but then it swam under the pier about 40 meters away from me and my leader was cut clean off just above where the hook was. Dam fun but so dissapointed. My thoughts are it might have been a barracuda ?
Any suggestions??

I thought of that but the consensus between the brains trust on the pier with me was that it was too fast for a Ray,,

Skate will often go for a run like that as well, the shark you described sounds like a swell shark, pretty common catch around there.
