Swan bay jetty

Post by Hird » Mon Mar 10, 2014 8:25 pm

Hi all, first post. Just wondering is the swan bay jetty worth a fish? At night or early morning
I have fished it years ago for gummies
But only ever got banjos
I was at point lonsdale pier on sunday
Morning and got 4 nice kgw but had to leave
Toooooo many people and current causing
All types of hassles with line tangles.

Cheers

I've never fished it but have friends that do,
there are heaps of leatherjacket there, most small, but some decent ones.
Garfish can be caught early in the morning.
Gummies are caught there too from time to time. Haven't heard reports of any for a while though.

I could be wrong but I've always read reports of trevally through there

Fishing off the jetty doesn't produce as well as the mouth of the bay for gummies. From memory there is a hole somewhere near the jetty which is about 2m deep rest is about half a metre and weed, fishing the hole is probably your best chance of getting anything at all and it would recommend high tide as at low tide it's about a foot deep and the only thing out there is banjos. Also I think the jetty may still be torn apart from when I last went start of year.

There are gummies all over swan bay even in 50cm or less of water, funny thing they are almost black from the dark ground and water.
This was a little one I got a few months back at lakers on a 2-5kg rod, 2500 reel and 8lb leader.

Nice fish vikodin, there is very little area to fish around swan bay because of the marine park thats one of the reasons I don't fish it, also was the fish taken landbased or boat?

That was land based, lakers cutting its a man made cutting connected to swan bay so you can legally fish there.
Its just as if not more shallow than swan bay, I was fishing an unweighted live crab so the cast only went 15-20m out and into about 50cm of water.

The rest of swan bay apart from a decent sized channel through the guts of it and the pier is as you said marine sanctuary.
That's one of the reasons I love kayak fishing, so many more options.

If you can get a spot at least 2\3rds down swan bay jetty and put a 70m cast out in the direction of Melbourne. It should put you in 1-1.5m, plenty deep enough.
