Apollo Bay - Saturday 14/7 AM

Post by StarrangerAU » Sun Jul 15, 2018 7:06 pm

So after swearing off the fishing till September only two weeks ago, its Friday 10.30pm and I find myself doing a sprint run to Apollo Bay. The tides might be all wrong for this outing but the winds are down below 10knts for the next 24hours.... take your chances when they come.

Pier was empty on arrival bar one fairy penguin doing laps under the light, its about 4 degrees the swell is absolutly powering past the rock groyne into the bay... I'm feeling hopeful, as big waves should encourage big fish. Out go my two set lines, and I get on the tiddler for some fresh bait...its 11.00pm, high tides about now, come on you big thing. Give me a few big pb salmon please. And I wait, and I wait, and then to change it up a bit, I wait some more.

3am rocks around, all I've managed is 3 huge ass rays, which I had zero chance of landing on the pier, thus lost 3 good sets of tackle. So I decide to take a kip in the car and try again at sun up.

Mmmm nope, Its no better at 6am at low tide. A few small salmon but certainly nothing worth keeping. Highlight of the morning at about 10am was being able to watch a baby whale coast into the bay for 10- 15 minutes, take a look around and swim out to sea again. Graceful little thing, my estimate was that it was ptobably a good 4 meters,

All up, it was a doughnuts trip..... *sigh* maybe next time.

There must be more fairy penguins than people think I saw plenty off portarlington sat. It’s great to see whales especially when they breach. Great report hope your next trip gets you on some
