Apollo Bay Harbour

Post by Yippie Kay Yay » Sun May 11, 2014 9:48 pm

Just spent three hours on the inside of the breakwater. Near the end. Had a few nibbles on pippies but no hook ups. Pulled in a puffer fish and an octopus that had a foot long body amd tested my egi rods strength. .. tried to get a photo but it 'walked' off the boulder and back into the water. Both caught on a dark red chameleon 3.0 squid jig at high tide.

Also had a visit from 2 fisheries men. I was down the breakwater by the water in the dark and they approached from behind and took a minute to say they were from the ministry after first saying hi. The minute or two while they watched me in the dark before the said who yhey were got me wondering if I was about to be mugged or something. . PR is a wonderful thing... in the end they just left me to it after checking my license.

Good to hear you at least caught something. if you get yourself some prawn bait and fish between the boats there are a lot of leather jacket to be caught and casting out further into the the harbour some nice grass whiting. You can also fish off the boat ramp floating jetty which is a good place for squid and i have caught lots of grass whiting and leather jacket off there on prawns as well. I have also caught a few small salmon on lures casting from the end of the pier into the ocean side.

Maybe get yourself a spare rod with a mean off shore treble so you could "accidentally" cast backwards if you felt insecure :super:

It was just the way they both said hi then stood in the dark watching me for a minute or so. Not a soul around otherwise.

On the fish front it was interesting to hook a puffer on a squid jig but hauling in and watching the octopus was both a challenge on the egi rod and a great experience to see such an awesome creature traverse the rocks in yhe light of my head torch when I let him go.
