Dead birds on Gunnamatta???

Post by Crustyfrog » Sun Nov 10, 2013 12:11 pm

I went down to Gunnamatta late on Friday afternoon.
Absolutely terrible conditions, choppy, N/W howling along the beach and a low tide, didn't even put a line in.
There was a terrible smell at the Surf Club end stairs, I walked up towards the first stairs and counted 40 dead black crow like birds along the beach between the stairs.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the hell that would be about?

yeah there is a huge problem at the moment with mutton birds. they are literally starving to death. matt cini has had to cancel charters because of mutton birds diving down and taking baits off hooks! hopefully as the weather warms up more bait comes into the bay and the mutton birds get a feed

I saw a heap of them on Chelsea beach the other day as well, but they are very very noticable at the gun.

Same thing at Barwon Heads today, a few washing up the river and more on the beaches.
Pretty sad really. :(

jeez that's a fair hike that they make. No wonder they are tired. Explains why one of them sat next to me on the pier for 20min after I finished untangling the bugger from my line. I thought it was just a pretty chilled bird at the time

It was probably waiting for a Pilly from you, did you give him one?

That's exactly what they were.
I thought maybe the end of the world was nigh.
Knowledgeable as always.
Thanks!
