They were everywhere when I was in gippsland too, scattered dead across the beaches.

Supposedly dead mutton birds who died from exhaustion flying south from North Hemisphere ... supposedly happens each year ... NEVER seen before ever! Love to know why so many this year? Absolutely terrible conditions, choppy, N/W howling along the beach and a low tide, didn't even put a line in.
There was a terrible smell at the Surf Club end stairs, I walked up towards the first stairs and counted 40 dead black crow like birds along the beach between the stairs.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the hell that would be about?
