Gunnamatta 01/01/14
As i havent been able to get in much fishing at all recently when the opportunity was there i decided to take the hour drive at 2am and head to Gunnamatta with the hope of catching my first Gummy(first real attempt at targetting one) and also bagging a few salmon.
Found a nice gutter pretty much infront of the steps and had rods in the water by about 3.15 one baited with fresh squid and the other a whole pilchard with a SFP sentinel that i got as a free sample when i bought some gear off them recently.
About 4am the 13ft rod with the pilchard buckled over and it didn't take long to realise that this wasn't a salmon, after a nice fight and some good runs peeling off a bit of line i finally was able to get alook in the wash at what it was and much to my surprise and delight it was my first ever gummy and after a few quick pics, as hard as that is to do by yourself in the pitch black, sent her on her way to fight another day.
Not to sure on the size just wanted to get her back in but felt pretty weighty maybe 7kgs in that region.
About 10 mins later my other rod with the squid on it buckles over too and i quickly realise i have a ray of some sort that decided to anchor itself to the bottom of the gutter. About 30mins or so later i finally got on top and got a look at a big shovel nose ray, cut the line and off it went.
Just on sunrise bagged two nice salmon both on pilchards bringing the end to and eventful evenings/mornings fishing.

Nice gummie perfect eating size, to be legal they have to be 65 cm from the back of the gills to the start of the caudal fin ( tail ) if it was 7kg it would have been well in.

I'm pretty sure the size is 45cm. Not 65cm.Nude up wrote:Nice gummie perfect eating size, to be legal they have to be 65 cm from the back of the gills to the start of the caudal fin ( tail ) if it was 7kg it would have been well in.

I assume this is relevant? I wouldn't know a Gummy shark if I tripped over one!BigJ wrote:I'm pretty sure the size is 45cm.
