Gunna report Fri 4th 23:30- Sat 01:45 Jan

Post by Ant2014 » Sun Jan 05, 2014 3:08 am

So I turn up 23:30 and a few in the car park . As I'm unloading 5 blokes come back and report it's dirty as. Not knowing what they meant I headed down the closest steps to the toilet block, in the car park furthest from the main entrance, near the life guard club (car park 2?)

Anyway 2 on the beach as I cast, 5min later the other 2 blokes pack up and go, only me left.

Didn't take me long to understand dirty, seaweed everywhere. Rods bending and going off tap and the longer you left it the harder it was to reel in. Had soccer ball size of seaweed.

Could tell you more to make you laugh but left 01:45. Wind wasn't too bad but very misty, think it was 17knots on the radar.

Is the carpark right at the end car park 2?

Is there anyway to find out that the tide is bring in heavy seaweed?

Cheers
Ant

Hey Ant, quite often after southerly winds and big swell you'll have the same issue. It's a suck it and see thing really.
Carpark two is the more frequented one by anglers, that is the one with the permanent gutter at the bottom of the steps.
I used to fish from the first carpark quite regularly, but just found more success heading down the ramp at carpark two and prospecting from there up towards cape schanck.

Hi Ant,

At Gunnamatta, here is a quick breakdowns of "ideal" conditions.

Within an hour of high or low tide.

Within an hour of sunrise or sunset.

With a swell less than 1.0, prefereably around the 0.5 mark.

Either little or no wind, or a North, North East, or Easterly as blowing hard.

You can certainly get fish on other days, but these are, in my opinion the best conditions.

If you look at willyweather and search Gunnamatta beach, you'll see that Thurs-Fri-Sat this week looks fantastic.

Hey Doug, and thanks! Yes I use willy weather and also http://www.baywind.com.au/ppb/index.php?L=ppb&R=&T=4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Not sure how good bay wind is but seems not bad.

i also headed down yesterday arvo for a look, never been surf fishing but had nothing to do so went to give it a crack. stood at the top of the hill in the bottom carpark and got sandblasted and saw how bad it looked so got back in the car and drive up to mt martha to have a crack off the rocks.

Lot more snaggy areas than gunners, can be awesome on its day. Had some stunning sessions there, but a lot of blanks..
Pm me if you need more detail than that.

I was there friday arvo with a mate and left at sunset. We fished the last carpark and walked a bit down towards cape shank. Was lowtide around 7:30.

First spot had a lot of side current that even pulled the rod holders out of the sand. Moved to another gutter that was only a couple of meters out of shore and was much easier to fish. Only managed a couple of bites.

Probably head back down during winter when the salmon are on.
