i reckon your right on that one, how am i supposed to learn when teachers are only getting 40% of examples right :O
Cam
you need to show them how things should be done. You will learn faster and better that way.

Looking forward for your report Dougie.

I just got back from Rye back beach, had a quick flick but didnt get anything.
Was still good to get out with my little girl.
There wasnt much in the way of holes and gutters.
Cheers

Shirtloads of weed and swell twice as big as what the weather forcast said we should have. Walked the length once with no result.

Other than the very deep hole at the stairs the rest of the beach seems quite featureless at the moment.

High Tide was high and the waves were smashing into the dunes in places.

As I was walking back from Carls Hole (down the end near Cape Schanck) I saw an older lady get knocked over and swept out. Threw my rod up the dunes and sprinted off down the beach, by the time I got there a 13ish year old surfer had pulled her out. Dude must have weighed about half as much as her, serious display of skill from the young man and a terrifying reminder of how dangerous this beach is.

Lack of fresh bait saw me put the gummy/mulloway hunt on hold, headed to Blairgowrie jetty and met up with a mate and his wife who had never fished before. Saw a couple of squid and a couple of trevally landed, one guy lost his new shimano nano with a stradic c4 over the side when his GF put it down and a fish grabbed the bait, only to get it back half an hour later when someone else landed the same fish.

Toddlers and drunks were creating a lot of noise so I left fairly swiftly after that, again reminded why I like spots that are hard to get too.

I'm dyyyyyyyyying to get some fresh baits out of a surf beach one night, but i feel like frozen pilchards or even "fresh" silver whiting from a fish shop is a waste of time.

Bad luck about the fresh bait. But never give in to the temptation to put out a silver whiting on a westernport beach. Only two things eat em in westernport. Squid and seals. The rest ignore them. Even snapper most of the time. Completely different story in ppb though.

Silver whiting on a squid spike under a float seems like a reasonable way to get some squid maybe at flinders? I'd settle for that as a back up plan if I can't get salmon next time since i consistently fail with squid jigs.

Silver whiting for gummies/snapper/flathead/mulloway is a good idea in PPB then? Today was the first time i've used them, only picked them up cos i happened to walk past a fish shop and see "fresh" silver whiting, having read last night about them being used as a jewie bait.

I'd suggest silvers as a bit of a last resort bait in regards to gummys. You'd have more luck with pillys. As for mulloway I have 0 answers but I wouldn't have it in the first 10 baits I'd try.

i was at blairgowrie round 3-4pm. when did the squid get landed? I started the day throwing jigs at flinders, moved to portsea then BG for donuts. frustrated, and my jigs are quite depleted in number

Was that you walking that I spoke to and you offered me a Sabiki jig?

All the squid were around high tide at 6pm.
