Sawtell's Inlet, Tooradin

Post by Whiskers » Tue May 24, 2016 8:03 pm

Fished the inlet above the South Gippy Hgwy today from about 1.00pm until 6.00pm.

The inlet is chock full of baitfish. Plenty of mullet, trevally and salmon. Size varies from about 10 to 20cm. They are biting like crazy on pipi's, just small bits of pipi on a small hook.

A couple of times this afternoon I saw a couple of bust ups of small poddy mullet, followed by a big splash and swirl. The most likely culprit would probably be an EP.

I had a livebait out and also gave lures a hard workout but no takers.

With so many baitfish in the inlet it's London to a brick that the big predators are also there.

I fished there a fair bit and experienced similar things. *something* silver and long jumps at sunset and will not take anything i put in front of it. I can't tell if it's a big mullet or possibly a jewie but everytime i go the first reasonable mullet i catch i slap back out on a live bait hook and have never had it touched.

From what i've seen the jumping fish are typically large mullet, see it a fair bit in gippsland

Sea Mullet usually eat diatoms and other near microscopic food items - hence, pretty damn hard to catch!

Stupid jumping mullet. Did my head in last time I was there haha.

Apparently you can get those big sea mullet on small poppers. But yeah hard to stick a hook into
