Charters in winter

Post by fishingdad » Wed Jun 22, 2011 8:46 pm

I'm looking at taking my 12 year old son fishing for the first time during July. Was hoping to get on a charter in either bays, but was wondering if....1. charters ran in winter and.... 2. if we have any chance of catching something worthwhile. Should we wait until spring?

I've only taken him to fish farms and he's obsessed. I don't really care what we catch, I just want him to experience bay fishing.

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers

Jason

If it I was you, i'd probably go. I've been on one or two winter charters and we caught species such as wrasse, leatherjacket, perch, whiting, etc.. we even trolled for salmon and caught lots! Now these were charters from queenscliff, which are MUCH BETTER than the melbourne ones. Pretty much all you get from the melbourne charters are undersized flatties and pinkies. Queenscliff charters will provide you with a good feed and a good catch at the end of the day.
Some charters even do night charters to specifically target big gummies.
Whenever you do go, best of luck, and I hope your son catches a few fish making it a trip to remember!

Cheers :)

The first time fishing? You would most wan't it to be a memorable one. I would go when the seas are smooth and the sun is shining and make it an enjoyable day on the water, go in spring when the snapper run is on  But if you can't wait that long you can still head out on the bay but risk of bad weather and not as high fish activity..... there are still squid, big gummies and the occasional snapper and your ever pesky loved flatty on offer. :wink1:

Cheers Beno

Where abouts do u live, i dont think charters are worth it this time of year i think ur better off going to the beach and catching some whiting. Or go to eildon and go on one of there charters

Thanks for the replies - much appreciated. I might look at the weather and try and sneak a Queenscliff/Sorrento charter in as suggested.

I live in Langwarrin and still have surf fishing rods/tackle from years ago so we could try the beaches as well. Any idea of which beaches are fishing well?

Thanks again, it's good to find a site with helpful fishos.

I would try balnarring/point leo. Plenty of fish species on offer in that area.
