Will you certainly put in the hard yards this trip between long hikes and the snakes but you received the reward for all your effort. Sadly am well past a 10 km walk prior to fishing these days!

It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

I've been using a 2wt for the small streamsfor a bit of fun but if I was to nominate a best all rounder it would probably be a 8'6 5wt or possibly a 8' 4wt.
Mazman, I use the six weight as I target a wide range of fish including bass, trout in lakes, maccas and even small cod. In some of those scenarios you need the grunt not necessarily to put the fly out but to try to stop the fish. Its the only fly rod I have - in the back of my truck this trip I had 5 different rods for different situations so I have stuck to just the one 6 wt fly rod as an all rounder. The reel is a fairly large Hardy salmon reel with a backup spool with sinking line for nymph fishing and targetting maccas and cod.

Paul, I am approaching 60 and know that the time is coming where I won't be able to do this. I am going to suffer for a few days while I recover from this trip! But while I can I am going to keep doing it.

One of my blackfish spots involves going down a scary 4wd track, a long hike, and carrying a rope to get down the steep bank into the stream. If the weather is ok I might head out there next week. If the reports stop well you will know I never made it back out!! ;-)

Best Wishes

Great couple of good sessions on the trout Truedogz. especially the second one, small streams quite often hold a lot of fish and are well worth fishing..
Top report and pic's to go with it.. It's certainly that time of year for snakes and they are regularly close to the water when it's hot & dry.

cheers

Great report, nice to see some activity in this section of the forum!

Slight thread hijack but do you guys think breathable waders with jeans underneath would be enough to stop a snake bite? I've probably lulled myself into a false sense of security.....

great work Will. I'm only recently getting into waving flies at trout, and have had some limited success. It's certainly a fun way to fish, and making a good cast is almost as satisfying as hooking a fish
