Fortunately, the fangs of Victorian snakes aren't that long, 3 - 5 mm. Breathable neoprene waders are typically 4 - 5 mm in thickness. Throw in the jeans and you are pretty safe. I have worn gumboots but these don't provide good traction in steep scenarios. Recently I followed davo's lead and bought some gaiters.
