Im not sure about a run up in the official casting comps in the UK because in Europe they cast off about 1.5 x 1.5 meter platforms like us. The only place they don't cast off platforms are in America but i could not see any advantages of a run up anyway, it would throw your tracking right off and it would be to hard to keep a constant load on the rod. Someone in Europe casted 78meters with the single handed distance rod not long ago and I was having a chat to John Rumpf at the Australians and he said that he had gotten a few 100meter cast in practise ages ago with the Double Handed Fly Distance Rod!!

Saw it at the CLA 2002. As it's the largest in the country I'd say it was official. I've described the set-up previously. Whether they've changed the rules since 2006, the last CLA I attended? The Spey cast you're referring to, double handed, is an entirely different cast to the double-haul and a 50m cast is the norm in the 'field' with a conventional 15' rod so it wouldn't surprise me that 100m is achievable with specialist equipment.

Pleased to hear it Jim.

I think the competitions we are talking about are slightly different. The ones you are talking about are more of distance casting with normal fishing gear and fishing lines, are they casted on water? The comp I am talking about is the World Casting Games (not just fly casting but weight and plug as well), the fly casting events in this comp are the ICF (International Casting Federation) Skish Fly Accuracy, Single handed fly distance (which 9ft'6 rods which are pacifically for casting are used) and Double Handed Fly Distance (Not Spey casting at all, the 17ft rods which are designed for a 120gram shooting head are false casted overhead and not spey casted). This comp is held by the International Casting Sport Federation. The events will change from country to country (some having just fly casting comps while others have fly, plug and weight in one) but all will use the same gear designed for maximum distance not fishing. The only time a fishing rod would be used in one of these comps would be in the accuracy because you need a rod that suit you best .
The rods are different to fishing rod because they have thin walls but a large diameter which makes the stiff and light but this decreases durability and can break easily if used in a way other than casting.
