Australian Fly Casting Championships

Post by BrynnF » Mon Jun 02, 2014 10:16 am

Next weekend is the Australian Fly Casting Championships which will be held over Saturday and Sunday (Saturday distance and Sunday Accuracy). The Accuracy is going to be held at the Casting Pool located in Highett Reserve, Cnr Chesterville and Turner Roads, Highett. Melways 77 J 9. Send me a PM for a map and the distance is going to be held at one of the ovals next to the casting pool. Both days start at 9:30am but most people will be there at 9am.
It is a good chance to see some of the best casters in Australia. Just to give you an idea of the distances, some of the good casters can get 50m plus with the single handed rod and over 60m with the double hander.
Hope to see you there.

Thanks mazman, from what we know so far I am the youngest to ever win it. Great to see John Rumpf (a very accomplished caster and fisherman who has competed in world events many years ago) back near the top and winning the DHD.
Dry (50 points being a perfect score), ICF (100 being a perfect score) and Wet (50 being a perfect score) are accuracy event, FAD stands for Fishermans accuracy distance, SHD single handed distance and DHD double handed distance. The SHD and DHD scores are in meters and are the average of the casters top 3 cast.

They are rods designed for 16mt 38gram shooting heads, if you were to compare them to a fishing rod they would equal about a 12/13wt rod in stiffness. We use very thin mono as running line for maximum "shoot", and remembering we cast off a 40cm high platform so that adds a little distance. My furthest with the single handed for the day was 59.90mt which is a personal best.

That's an excellent distance, well done. Something to aspire to eh Jim?

In the UK they're allowed a run up at the distance events. I've met Hywll Morgan a few times and seen him throw a line 50m with a broom handle and out of the arena with a lead-core shooting head on his casting rod. His other party piece is to cast multiple rods with both hands simultaneously. About 10 in each - I can't even pick up 10 in both hands, lol.
There is no such thing as a stupid question, only a stupid answer.
