North Coast NSW LB Trip
North Coast NSW LB Trip
On the way back from a 4 day trip to far north coast NSW with my brother (Fishn104)
After taking a week off work and planning a trip to try for land based tuna in Victoria didn't work out due to shitty weather and big swells, we decided this was the go.
After about a 16 hour drive we arrived at Yamba later at night. Managed a few blind casts before hitting the sack. Next morning we headed out to the breakwall. Nothing caught but we did see a few mackerel about 8kg or so chasing bait around which was an awesome sight, but wouldn't take lures. A few more hours of spinning without any success but things were looking good.
A decision was then made to head across the river to the town of Iluka. Speaking to a few locals and the tackle shop there it seemed like most of the action had slowed down, but that wasn't going to stop us. By mid afternoon we were on the breakwall in Iluka with livies out which were surprisingly easy to get. A few of these tackers caught aswell if the bait went down past the yakkas and slimeys We didn't have to wait too long before seeing the baitfish get harassed from below and within seconds of that the float went under and the rod loaded up and started peeling line a million miles an hour. 120m first run! Once the fished stopped, the rest was very easy with the new Avet reel and 80lb braid. Couldn't believe we got our first lb longtail tuna. Couple quick snaps and speared it back in to keep harassing more bait. With a few baits left and the sun gone down we stopped closer to the beach to try for mulloway. The tailor kept smashing the baits, so they too became bait. Unfortunately to success on the jewies tonight Called it quits after a 10 hour session and got back to the car to find someone had written in the dust across the back window " F@(K OFF TOURISTS" WTF!!
The whole of next day was spent on the wall trying for pelagics again and again baitfish was readily available. A few livies were hit in the morning but no hookup, then nothing till late in the afternoon when the rod loaded up and screamed off. Within seconds it had dumped 150m of line before slowing down. A much better fight on the lighter gear. After an intense battle another nice longtail tuna surfaced. A few more snaps and it was released. Not long after that we landed another.

With the sun light just about gone we packed up and returned to the car
20 mins in the rod buckles over, after a 5 minute battle the line got caught in the rocks and busted off!
Not long after same thing happened, rod buckled over, another 5 minute battle and again the light got caught but this time it got free. A minute or so later there she was, the majestic creature. Smiles all round, a few shaky pics and she swam off back to the depths. The next few hours was really frustrating with about 6 big runs most resulting in bustoffs. We stayed till the next tide change and on change it happened again, a quick brutal battle and another jew appeared. A few more snaps and with a bit of a push she slowly swam down. With the sun coming up and our eyelids barely able to function we called it quits and crashed for a few hours
The afternoon saw us at the breakwall again, but today nothing exciting happened. Evening was jewie time again, a much quiter night also with only a couple of bustoffs. The sun coming up it was time for.... , sleep hahaha.
Late morning we headed over to check out the town, a bit of shopping, done the laundry and before we knew it was jew-o-clock. Alot of little pickers and crabs out tonight. Managed 2 smaller models, a couple of bream and another bustoff. At 4:30am it was all over, 3 hour sleep and the long 16 hour drive lay ahead. Definitely a trip with memories that'll last a long long time
The only downside was some of the locals are absolute wankers, with nothing better to do than look for trouble. They have no manners whatsoever, and think that they own the joint!
But other than that, it is a magnificent place to visit, especially If your a mad keen fisho, with a good tackle shop (Iluka bait and tackle) and a great bloke running it. Not many places you can go from catching tuna to mulloway and so much more all within a few minutes of each other!
Thanks for reading
We soon found out someone had actually bent both front wipers all the way back..now we were really pissed, who does that kinda ****!!
After bit of a break and a bite to eat it was time to head in the river for a jew. Mullets were everywhere, constantly busting the surface.20 mins in the rod buckles over, after a 5 minute battle the line got caught in the rocks and busted off!

Really great pics and report - I guess the amazing fishing made up for the actions of those wiper-bending bone-heads!
I hope you left some of that mojo on the reel I bought from you
Cheers,
Mike.

Thumbs Up Abzz & Fishn104
What dedication from you guys - just bloody awesome!!! And here i have some friends whom complained about a 2 hours drive for some fishing trips!!!
Pity about some of the locals whom have either air or rocks between their ears (or both!!) .. All coastal towns needed the visiting tourists to support their local economy and these farkwitts decide to tell you guys to fark off as well as damaging your property .. Farking speechless i am!!
Very well done on the fishes !!!
