Deep Drop Success Monday 1st August

Post by Downrigger » Mon Aug 01, 2016 11:15 pm

Down to the ramp this morning and found a good omen – a kingie frame from some successful fisho yesterday:

After a (failed) attempt at live bait catching and a (failed) jigging session at Twelve Mile it was on to Browns Mountain, riding a light westerly tailwind. Sounding around while we thawed bait and sorted rigs, some good mark showing at 400 metres:

We had all three sizes of Tanacom electrics aboard, and didn’t they get a workout as the day progressed:

First drop, maybe five minutes to the bottom, line stops going out, bring sinker up a few metres to clear the snag field. Tap tap tap, I’m on:

The limit for gemfish is only two per angler so when they’re swarming you’re going to bag out quickly. Which is why we’re always trying different things at Browns. Today I dumped a bag of pilchards into the burley pot and set a small live gemfish on a 13/0 circle four boat lengths behind the prop. It didn’t last long but that could have been due to my poor hook positioning. Meantime Fitz was filling the chiller bag with quality gems:

But with a nasty nor westerly building (which won’t show on Seabreeze, because it was produced by a smallish offshore storm cell) everyone excepting ourselves and one other boat bailed. Whitecaps building so we elected to head due west to the Peak so we could run along the troughs if the seas got worse. All good, it backed off after fifteen miles travelled. Some mark showing on my favourite pinnacle but too even and regular, to be predators mixed with bait:

So after a couple of drops it was back into the ramp. Thanks to Fitz for being great company and for filleting the catch. Looking forward to doing it all again next week, Andy

They're easy to fillet Anth and they freeze well too. After that's done you can do pretty much anything with the meat. I cut them into matchbox size blocks then a fast sear either side with maybe some soy or cracked black pepper. Quick fast and tasty!

Andy, very good post and thanks for sharing. Great image on the sounder. At 415 metres - that image is brilliant. Can i ask you which transducer are you using? With my Lowrance which is a HDS 10, I'm lucky to see the bottom sometimes at that depth.

Joe
