LB Far North Coast NSW

Post by abzz » Sun Apr 15, 2018 12:44 pm

Hi guys
On the way back from a trip to Iluka - North NSW

The first half of the trip was tough fishing as the swell was up and the wind mainly from the North
We only could spend a couple of morning sessions on the wall going for pelagics..no success

Looking at Iluka from Yamba
So we fished in the river instead and managed 3 jews

By Thursday the swell had dropped a fair bit so we tried again for pelagics but the wind made it very difficult to keep a float out. I walked the end with a big soft plastic..first cast i was on. After a very intense fight a mulloway of about 12kg surfaced. With the other boys being far away and the swell way too big to get down i held it in the rocks and prayed. They saw me fight the fish and rushed to help..but just before they got there...PING, the swell had rubbed the leader on the rocks too many times

We decided to instead focus on just the mulloway since time was running out, so Friday morning we spun up some of the hundreds of tailor that were keen on lures.

A new lure doesnt stay new for long
That night we used the tailor for bait and managed one mulloway and a couple of bustoffs.
The same process was repeated on Saturday, resulting in 4 mulloway, another 2 lost, a small shark and about 7 bustoffs.

As always the fishing starts to heat up as you're about to leave!! All in all a decent trip leaving you wanting to back again..and again :)

Yeah mint!
Are mulloway a fairly common catch everywhere in NSW? Or are they ghosts like in most vic estuaries?

Good day,
Mulloway are not so commonly caught in NSW but are fairly consistently caught by anglers who target them. Ocean beaches from the Central Coast north to the Queensland border can be productive and most of the big river mouths, particularly the Clarence (Iluka/Yamba) and the Hawkesbury are renowned big mulloway spots.
