Two & A Half Hour Session On The Mersey River.

'' TWO & A HALF HOUR SESSION ON THE MERSEY RIVER.'' 21-10-14

With a light North Easterly breeze still hanging around late this afternoon I decided to head on over to Merseylea to have a short spin session. I hit the river just on 5.05pm in what was just beautiful conditions and even better the wind had dropped right off. The river was clear and still running around 150mms higher than I would have liked, but it was wade-able and that's what mattered the most.

The first fifty or so meters weren't productive at all and then the next small fast water run I managed two hookups and could only get one small (310gm) rainbow to stay on. The other trout which was also a small rainbow tossed the #00 copper Black Fury on the very first leap from the river. Still, this was a good start to the session and I was hoping it would continue like this over the next couple of hours. Well over the next one hundred meters I had four more hookups for just the one small (280gm) brown landed.

They weren't very aggressive hits either as I had to let the spinner drift with the flow with a very slow retrieve until I felt the weight of the fish on the lure. They were just mouthing it, and most fish were only being lipped by the spinner. The wind had also sprung up from the North East again and I'm sure this had an effect on the way they were taking the lure.
Over the next hour and a half of going through the same routine of drifting the spinner with the flow I picked up another three small to medium size browns and hooked and lost four others before calling it a day at 7.35pm. With winds forecast from NNE, Nth and SE right up until Saturday it looks like a tough few days of trout fishing ahead that's for sure. But, I'll still go and have a crack at catching a few more anyway.
Cheers
Adrian
