Pirtek Challenge, trout just not large enough..

Post by meppstas » Mon Mar 18, 2019 4:49 pm

Had a crack at catching a decent trout in the Pirtek Fishing Challenge yesterday, I did measure (used last years brag mat) the third 34/35 cm trout caught where I had a flat enough area to measure it.. I did manage to catch & release 15 browns from 19 hook ups in just under four hours in the river. I did get a couple that were over the 35 cms but with high river banks and foliage all the way along the river I wan't too bothered about measuring them. Had they been fish over the 1 kg mark ( like the one caught here four days earlier ) then I would have done something about it.. It was still a good spin session any way and that's all that mattered on the day. It also gave the Okuma Helios SX20 spin reel & Okuma ULS 6' 6" 1-3 kg trout rod a good work out on the day, both stood up to it too.. Good thing was it's taken my seasons tally to 418 which I'm happy about.. :super:

Still a top session mate. 15 browns from 19 hook ups can’t complain!!!
Is that a new rod and reel combo you just got? Glad to hear you were happy with both.
Great pics as always!
Cheers

More prize money for the mystery length so you are in with a show! The pic taking on the brag mat can be difficult. The fish is always going to move but without a lip on the zero of the bragmat, it can be difficult to 'zero' the fish. I guess they try to keep costs down so it is as it is. Great effort on the day too!
Cheers

It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Thanks guys..

Jim, I had all the trouble getting that brown to settle down on the plastic brag mat. It had to be dead flat or the trout kept sliding off the bloody thing & that's why I didn't bother doing any more pics of other trout I caught.
Last year I had a larger trout than this one but couldn't get it to settle down so just released it back in the river without worrying about photographing any more fish.. Damn pain in the butt it was..

cheers

Thanks Gra, it is the Meander, but it's an area I don't fish as often as I used to as it's very tough on the body.
it's also an area that normally gives up a few fish & one I don't advertise all that often.. ;-)

cheers

Mate, a trip like that is the trip to remember. A lot of fish caught and hooked, full of rod bending action. Well done.
