First trout of the 2019/20 season..

Post by meppstas » Mon Aug 12, 2019 11:26 pm

Finally managed to get back into a small tannin stream for a bit of a practice session in skinny (& 2-3 degrees) water to hone up the trout fishing skills. The water was a dark tannin colour so went for a Mepps Aglia fluo rainbow trout spinner. Good thing was I did have a few hook ups with just the two wild browns being caught.. Was nice to catch my first trout of the 2019/20 season too.. Really wasn't expecting any fish in this tannin water either, going by the land owner there weren't any trout in it, only blackfish to his knowledge..Seeing as he said I was welcome to fish the stream that ran through his 700 acres I wasn't going to miss seeing if I couldn't find a trout or two in it.. I reckon it will fish much better in 6-8 weeks time when the water temp rises.. Always nice to add the first couple of trout to my season tally sheet.. Gave the new Okuma Celilo 6' 1-3kg ULS trout rod & Okuma Helios SX20 spin reel filled with 4lb Super 100 Platypus clear mono a nice workout during the one & a half hour session. The Mepps Aglia fluo spinner did the job too..
Best fish was the second brown, it went 455 grams, both trout were released..

cheers
Adrian

Wow Adrian, congratulations for getting off the mark and getting the first trout of the season. From one came two , , , , from two shall come 795

Those photos of that obstacle course of a stream you were in, has given me an even better understanding of how punishing they are. And glad you proved the land owner wrong, I hope you can prove him wrong many many more times before the season ends.

Well done again Adrian :a_goodjob:

Cheers, Bill

Very nice Adrian. The fish looks like in a great condition.
That tea coloured water reminds me of upper yarra river here in Vic. The aglia is a good little lure for sure.

Nice report and great looking browns with that heavy bronze-ish top and popping red spots.

Great stuff Adrian,
Are the larger rivers still running too hard ??
Sportsbet gave me 3/1 that you'd fish Meander first, doughnuts again
Beautiful photos

Shame about the bet.. :-D :-D fished a creek first up, then had a look at the Meander which was running high, fast & very cold..
The rivers have come down to what they were but still around the 2-3 degree mark due to snow water coming down..
Once the water temps rise to around 9 degrees and up I'm sure the trout will be more plentiful.. until then I'll fish the small tannin streams, much easier on the body too..

cheers
